Museum of Primitive Art and Culture – South Kingstown, Rhode Island

Looking into the Past at the Museum of Primitive Art and Culture in Rhode Island. The Museum of Primitive Art and Culture, located in South County, Rhode Island, was founded in 1892. This makes it the oldest museum in the entire South County. It houses more than 15,000 pieces from around the world.

Visitors to the museum will be able to see many different kinds of items. Many of the items are from a variety of North American cultures. In fact, nearly all of the major North American cultures are represented. The oldest item in the collection, from East Africa, is a chopping tool that is nearly two million years old!

The current exhibits on display at the museum provide a great look at cultures from all around the world. The following are the current displays that you can expect to see on a visit to the Museum of Primitive Art and Culture: New England Woodsplint Baskets, Early Rhode Island Life, Visible Spirits: African Masks and Sculpture, Around the World, The Nineteenth Century American Collector, Southwest United States, and The Great Plains.

You can see arrowheads, tools, prehistoric stone artifacts, baskets, pottery, an Eskimo kayak, and more. Also on display are Stone and Bronze Age artifacts from Europe, African masks and hunting spears, and so much more. All of the items on display do a great job of taking a look into the past.

Though the gift shop is small, it has plenty of interesting items. You can find modern arrowheads, beaded jewelry, fossils, and a whole lot more at the gift shop. Many of the items for sale are priced at around $2, which means that the little ones should have plenty of money in their budget to get a souvenir.

The museum is open throughout the year; however, it is only open on Wednesdays from 10AM to 2PM or by appointment. You can find out more about the museum by visiting their website at primitiveartmuseum.org. At their website, you can find out about upcoming exhibits, as well as the history of the museum and where to call to make an appointment if you are visiting on a day other than Wednesday.

The museum is a fun filled place where you and the family can learn about some of the primitive cultures that existed in America and other countries around the world. It makes an interesting place to spend a few hours. You can even have a picnic or let the kids have fun on the playground on the adjacent Village Green.
