Roger Williams Park Zoo – Providence, Rhode Island

Spend the Day at the Roger Williams Park Zoo. Located in Providence, Rhode Island, the Roger Williams Park Zoo is home to more than 1000 animals representing nearly 140 different species. It is the third oldest zoo in the country, providing a fun and interesting place for families to go since its opening in 1872. One of the things that make this zoo special is that many of the buildings have a historical, Victorian look rather than the modern look of many zoos.

The zoo has six different geographical areas that visitors can explore. Those areas are the Plains of Africa, North America, Tropical America, Marco Polo Trail, Wetlands, and Austrailasia.

In the Plains of Africa, you can see some of your favorite animals in settings that appear very natural. Some of the animals that you can see are the African elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, wild dogs, and more.

The North America section of the zoo houses animals that range from the arctic to the forest out the back door. Visitors will be able to see bison, seals, the red wolf and a number of other animals that are common to the North America wilderness.

Tropical America features a wide variety of animals from the rainforest. Many of the animals here are very exotic. You can see the emerald tree boa, the green anaconda, a giant anteater, and a Jamaican fruit bat among other creatures.

The Marco Polo Trail was created in 1996. It creates scenes from Marco Polo’s journey, including a Venetian plaza, a Bedouin tent, the hull of a trading vessel like the one the explorer used, as well as some of the animals he would have seen on his journeys. Some of the animals include the Asian black bear, the snow leopard, and the red panda.

Located at the center of the zoo is the Wetlands trail. The ¼-mile trail meanders through the wetland area at the center of the zoo. Visitors will be able to see herons, ducks, geese, turtles, and more.

The Austrailasia section of the zoo contains animals from a number of different countries, including Australia, New Guinea, the Philippines, and Indonesia. You can see a huge variety of animals in this area. You can see the green python, wallaby, gibbon, kangaroo, and more.

If you and the family get hungry, be sure to stop at one of the concession stands for a bite to eat or something cool to drink. Don’t forget to stop by the gift shop before you leave.

The Zoo is open year round, though the summer and winter hours differ. From September 28 to April 14 the hours are 9AM to 4PM, and from April 15 September 27 the house are 9AM to 5PM. General admission is $12 for adults, $8 for seniors, and $6 for children.
